What this bubble text generator does

It swaps each letter for a version of that letter already enclosed in a shape. Four enclosures are offered: an outlined circle, a solid circle with the letter knocked out in white, an outlined square and a solid square.

How it actually works

The enclosure is not drawn around your letter. It is part of the character. Unicode encodes circled latin small letter a as its own item, distinct from a plain a, because circled letters and numbers were used as list markers and reference marks in Japanese and Korean publishing long before Unicode existed, and those documents had to be representable.

That history explains the coverage gaps you will notice. The hollow circled set is complete — both cases and the digits zero to nine. The filled set is not: it was added much later in a different block and contains capitals only, so the filled row above shows capitals even when you type lowercase, because there is nothing else to show.

Why the filled squares turn into coloured emoji. A handful of filled squared letters — the ones for A, B, O and P among them — were adopted as emoji, for blood types and for a parking sign. Emoji get colour and their own artwork, so on most phones those specific letters appear as red or blue tiles while the rest of your word stays monochrome. It is not a bug in the text; the same character is simply defined as an emoji on one device and a plain symbol on another.

Questions about bubble text

Why does the filled row show capital letters when I type in lowercase?

Because filled circled lowercase letters do not exist in Unicode. The hollow set covers both cases, but the filled set was added later and only ever included capitals. Rather than leave those characters blank, this tool maps lowercase input to the filled capital, which is what every other generator does too.

Why do a few of my squared letters appear in colour?

Certain filled squared letters double as emoji — the blood type symbols and a parking sign among them. When a character is defined as an emoji, phones draw it with the colour artwork from their emoji font instead of the plain text glyph. Those letters will look different from the rest of the word on most mobile devices.

Can I get bubble numbers above nine?

Unicode does encode circled numbers up to fifty, but only as single characters for each whole number, not as digits you can combine. This tool covers zero to nine, which is what you need for typing arbitrary numbers; a circled twenty-seven would have to be inserted as its own separate character.

Does bubble text work in a Discord channel name?

Yes, and it is one of the few places it genuinely helps. Discord channel names lowercase your input and replace spaces with hyphens, but circled letters are left alone, so they are a reliable way to make a header channel visually distinct in the sidebar.

Why does bubble text take up so much room?

Each circled character is drawn to fill roughly a square cell, so a word set in circles is noticeably wider and taller than the same word in plain letters. In a bio with a character limit this matters less than you would think — each circled letter still counts as one character — but visually it will dominate the line.
